LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Hundreds of thousands of Nevada families rely on food assistance. But recent changes to the SNAP program have left many waiting for help.

Even though the government is back up and running, weeks later benefits still haven’t resumed for everyone struggling to make ends meet. Here in the valley, Living Grace Homes, an organization that helps homeless mothers, is asking for the community’s help.

It says that every mother in its program is waiting for food benefits to start back up. The organization says it has seen a 100-percent drop in food benefits across its residents and a steep rise in requests for emergency meals.

Food donations down as need increases

“Living Grace has always supplemented that with additional food. And our food donations were down a bit, and our shelves have been more or less emptied,” said Kathleen Miller, founding director of Living Grace Homes.

Living Grace Homes is hosting a food and gift drop-off day Tuesday from noon to 2 p.m. They are asking the community to bring non-perishable canned goods, baby formula, and baby food.
