LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Federal officials will examine the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ response to antisemitism on campus, a U.S. Department of Justice release said Tuesday.
According to the release, the Civil Rights Division has launched an investigation into UNLV. The investigation aims to determine whether UNLV denied equal treatment to individuals based on race or national origin, a violation of Title IV and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The investigation will focus on UNLV’s response to antisemitism on campus, DOJ officials said.
“Publicly-funded universities are barred from discriminating based on race, national origin, or religion,” said Harmeet K. Dhillon, assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “This Department of Justice is fiercely committed to holding institutions of higher learning accountable and ensuring that every student receives equal access to the opportunity and education to which they are legally entitled.”
Officials said the investigation will examine whether the school engaged in discriminatory practices based on race, color or national origin against its students.
UNLV responded to the DOJ investigation Tuesday afternoon, saying:
“UNLV is aware of the announcement by the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. The university intends to cooperate fully and looks forward to a thorough and fair compliance review. We are confident that the review will demonstrate that the university has and continues to adhere to all applicable federal and state laws.”
On Friday, the University of Nevada, Reno, stated that it had received scrutiny from DOJ officials regarding its financial aid. UNR officials said the DOJ letter it received did not “accurately reflect how our University operates, particularly in relation to financial aid distribution and student support services.”
UNR officials stated that it remained in compliance with federal and state laws.
