LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — For decades, a North Las Vegas neighborhood has been slowly sinking. The Windsor Park community was built for Black families back in the 60s. Now only about ninety homes remain.
The residents have been promised brand new homes to be built nearby, paid for with government funding. After years of delays, work is finally underway.
The site that’s been secured for the entirely new community to be built is a vacant lot at Carey Avenue and West Street. Not far from the original neighborhood, 93 houses will be built. Monday morning, FOX5 met with some of the original residents there as work began, heavy equipment grading the land to become the new Windsor Park.
“We as a whole, as a community, we’re absolutely burnt out,” shared Nancy Johnson who has lived in Windsor Park for 50 years.
“You know, it’s just a nightmare… some people don’t have plumbing or water or roofs or holes in the wall, cracks in the wall. It’s very difficult to live like that,” Johnson stated.
“Not something you want to live in. If you drop something in the living room, have it roll into the kitchen,” described Myrtle Wilson about her home. Wilson moved in August 1965. Her home has been falling since the 80s. Residents say after years of broken promises from various government officials, State Senator Dina Neal stepped in.
“We’ve had so many roadblocks,” Neal contended.
After years of fighting, Neal secured $25 million dollars in funding for new homes for the people of Windsor Park during the 2023 legislative session.
“She was able to step in to help us because city left us up here to rot,” argued Johnson.
“We had a deadline of September 19th to spend $12 million which was the general fund dollars and so we were able to meet that deadline and that’s how we’re here right now,” Neal reported. Neal says they will hold a ribbon cutting when the first house is framed. Wilson, the oldest resident of Windsor Park, will be the first to move in.
“I’m just waiting. I’m just waiting… because you can’t never tell when another roadblock is going to happen,” Wilson explained.
“You hear one thing and then you hear another. And that’s the whole story for 30 plus years… The construction is a start, but we still want to see the homes come up,” Johnson argued.
Senator Neal says the $25 million secured to build the new community is enough for about 60 homes but they need additional money. Neil told FOX5 about $26 million more is needed to build all 93 homes, level the old homes of Windsor Park and transform that land into a park.
FOX5 reached out to the developer for an update on the project timeline for the new Windsor Park. They did not respond. Previously, they promised the community would be ready by Christmas of next year. Senator Neal believes that deadline will be met.
