LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The entrance to an apartment complex in the southeast valley was blocked for much of Sunday afternoon and evening as Metro Police investigated a shooting involving one of their officers.
According to Metro, reports came in just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday for an attempted carjacking off Indian River Drive, near Decatur Blvd. and Tropicana Ave., where a man pulled a knife on someone.
When officers got on scene, they attempted to speak to the man near the front entrance of the apartment complex, but the suspect did not comply.
From there, police tell FOX 5 there was a physical altercation which led the man to pull out what was believed to be a knife at the officers which caused one officer to shoot the suspect.
The man shot was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.
No Metro Police officers were hurt during this situation.
The shooting caused people living in those apartments to find another way of getting into their homes, including Andrea Hernandez who told FOX 5 she’s never seen anything like this in the five years she’s lived in the area.
“I do feel kind of unsafe,” Hernandez said.
“I even asked (my husband) is we have to move. . . this can happen to anyone. Even if you’re living in your apartment or driving your car. It’s crazy.”
This is the fifth shooting involving a Metro Police officer so far this year.
The investigation into this shooting is ongoing and the identity of the police officer involved will be released in 48 hours, per LVMPD policy.
