10-year-old child who died in northeast Las Vegas crash was CCSD student

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The 10-year-old child who died in a northeast Las Vegas crash while riding an e-scooter was a CCSD student, a letter from the district confirms.

The Clark County School District released a letter to FOX5 saying the child was a student at Cortez Elementary School. The child died after crossing into the path of a pickup truck near Lake Mead Boulevard and Pecos Road Thursday afternoon. Las Vegas police say another child was injured and was taken to the hospital with injuries deemed not life-threatening.

“My thoughts are with their loved ones, as well as every member of our community,” the letter says. “As we all mourn the loss of this young life, we are working to ensure that our students and staff have the support and resources they need. Counseling resources are available to those who may want assistance.”

The district says parents and guardians should monitor signs of grief and behavioral changes in children.

“Reassure your child that there is always someone with whom they can talk and that these feelings are normal,” the letter says.

CCSD says the crash is under a police investigation, and officials do not have additional information to share.

Officials with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the driver was not impaired and stayed at the scene.
