LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – According to a new report, the Southern Nevada Health District confirmed 14 West Nile virus cases so far in 2024.
The report, released Monday, shows an increase in cases than what FOX5 previously reported. Early July, we learned about seven total cases.
On June 26, the health district announced the first two cases of West Nile in the county.
The health district said five cases were non-neuroinvasive and nine cases were neuroinvasive.
Some people can develop a neuroinvasive form of the illnesses that cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord), SNHD said. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms.
“About 1 out of 150 people infected develop serious, sometimes fatal, illness,” the CDC said.
According to the map, it appears that most West Nile virus activity is found in the northwest Las Vegas area and North Las Vegas.
