LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Southern Desert Correctional Center will soon receive security upgrades.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, state officials approved an additional $2 million for a project to upgrade the perimeter security fence.

According to reports, the new fence will be electrified.

This project also includes underground piping replacement at High Desert State Prison and door and lock replacements.

The facility was part of a prisoner swap with Ely State Prison last month.

Nearly 2,000 inmates were moved between the facilities, however NDOC says the swap wasn’t the cause of the need for additional funding.

“This is really a direct need from two issues there was erosion of the fence line at southern desert but the real exacerbation of an escape that happened in September 2022 where a convicted bomber escaped over the fence line,” said during an Interim Finance Committee.

The suspect who escaped Porfirio Duarte-Herrera was serving a life sentence for the deadly 2007 bombing at the Luxor.

After five days on the run, he was finally taken into custody at a bus station near downtown Las Vegas.

Police say he was about to board a bus to Tijuana when they found him.
