TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Two people are in the hospital and a suspect is in custody after a shooting at a popular Tempe resort after a shooting Tuesday afternoon.
Police said it all started just before 2 p.m. when a man in his early 30s was spotted waving a gun on the Interstate 10 freeway and jumped the median. He then shot a car. The bullet went through the windshield but no one was hurt. The victim pulled over and called 911.
The suspect abandoned his car and then ran to Tempe Diablo Stadium and then to the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes, near 48th Street and Broadway Road.
Two resort employees confronted the man and he ordered them to the ground. That’s when he fired his gun, and the pair were hit by shrapnel. They were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition, police said.
The suspect then ran through the resort and tried to carjack a person. However, police said he couldn’t get the car started. Officers said they arrived around 2:10 p.m. and arrested the man in the lower-level parking lot.
His name has not been released. It’s unclear if he was impaired or mentally ill.

Aerial video from the scene showed crime scene tape surrounding a portion of the hotel and a heavy law enforcement presence.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said one lane of I-10 was blocked near Broadway Road due to law enforcement activity but it was reopened around 4:40 p.m.
An investigation is underway.
