LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A project that will transform a heavily-traveled part of Maryland Parkway is getting off the ground Monday.
United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Nevada congressional representatives, county and city leaders all joined for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Maryland Parkway Bus Rapid Transit line.
The $378 million RTC project will change two lanes on Maryland Parkway into bus or bike lanes only. It will also add covers to 50 bus stops and widen sidewalks.
RTC says the project will improve traffic flow and safety along the heavily-used corridor from Russell Road to downtown. Since buses will have their own lanes, cars won’t get stuck behind them when they stop.
Buttigieg says Southern Nevada’s growth makes projects like this essential to its future.
“It’s a challenge that puts pressure on your affordability, housing and transportation,” he said. “It makes it vitally important to make access to transportation fast, affordable and reliable.”
The target completion date is late 2026. Funding for the improvement project comes from the federal “Build Back Better” initiative.
Clark County and North Las Vegas are also contributing.
