LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Five UNLV softball players were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, the organization announced Tuesday.
Maddie Schmidt, Skyler Shaw, Sofia Morales, Ellie Zellien and Alanna Thiede were recognized for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Academic All-District honorees advance to the Academic All-America ballot, which first-, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced June 18.
Schmidt, a senior sociology major was named 2024 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year after collecting 85 putouts, 110 assists and rolled 11 double plays, which her seven in league play led the MW. She was second on the squad in batting average with a .346 and led the Rebels in hits with 60. She was a perfect 16-for-16 on stolen bases this season. Schmidt picked up All-Mountain West second team honors and All-West Region second team honors this season. Schmidt finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.85.
Shaw, a senior kinesiology major, batted a .327 this season for the Rebels which includes 37 hits, three doubles, three triples and 10 RBI. Her three triples were tied for the lead on the squad and she was second on the team in stolen bases with nine. Shaw finished the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.51 and is on the UNLV’s Dean’s List.
Morales, a junior business management major, earned CSC Academic All-District for the second straight season. She led the squad in sacrifice bunts with 10 and was fourth on the team in batting average with a .352. Morales closed out her junior year with a 3.77 cumulative GPA and is on the UNLV’s Dean’s List.
Zellien, a senior sociology major, earned All-MW second team honors this season after making 29 appearances in the circle for the Rebels and collected an 11-8 record which included 11 complete games. Zellien pitched a career-high 9.0 innings in the UNLV double header against Boise State and earned a 2-1 extra innings win. She held her opponents to only hitting .269. She finished this season with a 3.94 cumulative GPA.
Thiede, a senior communication studies major, led the UNLV pitching staff with a 3.76 ERA and a 16-7 overall record through 31 appearances. Her 16 wins ranked third in the Mountain West. She pitched six complete games this season and struck out 67 hitters. Thiede closed out the year with a 3.87 cumulative GPA.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have a 3.5 minimum grade point average, have participated in at least 90 percent of the season’s events or must start in at least 66 percent of the season’s events and have at least a sophomore standing both academically and athletically. Pitchers must have at least 25.0 innings pitched this season or 17 appearances.
