600 people come to job fair at Las Vegas VA center amid federal cuts

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A very good turnout for a job fair at the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center Auditorium.

Some 600 military and civilians turned out to speak with prospective employers, ranging from law enforcement, to gaming along with federal and state governments.

“It’s a great way for the community to partner with the VA and for everyone to come together in the interest of helping veterans and fellow community members,” said Derrick Love, a vocational rehabilitation counsellor and spokesman for the job fair.

Last year, 300 people turned out.

Tyiesha McCoy who came to the job fair looking for opportunities was delighted with what she saw and who she talked to during her two hour visit. “There is a lot of opportunity here and a lot of choices.”

McCoy wants to steer her career to health services.

The job fair was put on by the VA Southern Nevada Compensated Work Therapy Program.
