LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The National Park Service was awarded $8.66 million in grant funds to address the increase in illegal roads and off-road vehicles.

The Conservation Initiative has awarded the funds from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. According to officials, they hope to tackle the issue through a five-year project plan.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area officials reported illegal roads have doubled from 824 miles previously recorded.

“This will be a heavily partnership and community-oriented project,” said park Superintendent Mike Gauthier. “We look forward to working closely with the public, tribes, and conservation-focused partners to help protect cultural and natural resources in these key park locations. Together we will take the next steps for the park’s future, working to elevate the beauty and recreation that makes Lake Mead special.”

Officials hope the project will encourage community collaboration through education and outreach while addressing the current impacts of illegal roads on natural land in Government Wash and Overton Arm.
