LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 has learned that the gunman fired 24 shots at the Las Vegas Athletic Club on Rainbow Boulevard in the northwest valley on Friday. He then followed a gym employee through the facility, striking others in his path.

Metro Police provided a press briefing as well as bodycam video of the deadly encounter.

Three Metro Police officers fired a total of six shots at the suspect, 34-year-old Daniel Ortega of North Las Vegas, after they got to the gym within minutes of a flood of 911 calls.

But Ortega, who tried to run out of the front doors of the gym with a rifle in hand, didn’t make it far.

Some chilling 911 audio was played, which paints a better picture of what happened.

Dispatcher: “OK, what’s going on there?”

Caller: “I think I saw someone coming in with an AR.”

Dispatcher: “Come into the Las Vegas Athletic Club?”

Caller: “Yes.”

Dispatcher: “How many minutes ago did you see that?”

Caller: “Just right now.”

Dispatcher: “So, one minute ago, like right now, right? What color gun was it?”

Caller: “Black.”

Dispatcher: “OK, and you’re pretty certain he was by himself?”

Caller: “Yes, I think there’s shots.”

Assistant Sheriff, Jamie Prosser says the situation could have been even more deadly had this not happened with the shooter’s gun.

‘Fortunately, this gentleman had a malfunction in his in his weapon, which actually saved this from being a mass casualty event,” Prosser said.

LVAC shared photos on Instagram, stating the person killed, is 31-year-old Edgar Quinonez who worked at the gym for 15 years.

A gym employee tells FOX5 several workers were at the front desk area as the gunman was pacing around, and shortly after, Assistant Sheriff, Jamie Prosser says, “the employee fled when the gunman raised his rifle and started shooting, striking the employee. The suspect followed the employee deeper into the business and continued to fire rounds.”

According to Metro, the suspect was a member of the gym and worked out there.

“I can tell you from the investigation as right now there is no connection between the victim and the suspect,” Assistant Sheriff, Jamie Prosser said.

FOX5 is still trying to find out more about Ortega. So far, we only found that he has two drug charges and a DUI charge from 2013 in North Las Vegas.

Had he lived, Metro says Ortega would have faced one count of murder with a deadly weapon and three counts of attempted murder, among other charges.
