LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Ahead of the new school year, Clark County School District will roll out signal-blocking cell phone pouches to all secondary schools in the district.

Grades 6-12 will have to non-locking, signal-blocking pouches during classroom instruction.

CCSD said the move will help limit classroom distractions but that cell phones will still be available in an emergency.

“Every minute of instruction is important for student learning, and studies clearly show that cell phones distract students,” CCSD Interim Superintendent Dr. Brenda Larsen-Mitchell said in a statement. “Ten schools piloted the cell phone pouches last year with success leading us to expand the program to all our secondary schools.”

Elementary schools will have the option to use the cell phone pouches as well. The school district said parents and guardians will receive more information specific to their campus from their child’s school.

Some procedures could vary, but CCSD said most students will have to place their cellphone in the pouch at the beginning of the instructional day or period, silencing their phones or placing in airplane mode. Teachers can choose to either keep the pouches on a student’s desk or in a designated classroom area.

Students will be able to use their cell phones during other times such as:

  • Scheduled lunch periods
  • School-sponsored activities
  • Classroom periods with the approval of the classroom teacher
  • School bus transportation

CCSD said if there is an emergency, the students will be able to access their phones “as safety permits.”

STUDENT ID BADGE POLICY

In addition to the new cell phone pouches, CCSD also said that grades 6-12 will now have to wear ID badges while on campus.

CCSD said more information about how students can obtain their ID badges will come from their own school during the first few weeks of the school year.
