LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Shopping carts, bike parts, dirty clothes and other junk littered a drainage area near U.S. 95 and Rainbow about a month ago.
The location is right next to the Bonanza Bike Trail. People who live there say the trash has accumulated for a couple years.
But as of Wednesday, all that trash is gone. This week, the City of Las Vegas finished the cleanup by removing about 20,000 pounds of debris.
That is equivalent to the weight of about five mid-sized SUVs.
“It looks great. This is the best it looked since they put it in,” said Clarence Smith.
Smith has lived near the area for 36 years. Smith’s neighbor, Greg Brown, sent a text to FOX5 asking for help with cleaning the drainage area.
FOX5 contacted the city of Las Vegas and officials immediately got to work on the problem. Crews quickly cleaned part of the drainage spot.
Officials told us they needed more equipment to get to some of the trash. It eventually brought in a crane for trash removal and finished the job this week.
Not only did the city get rid of the trash, but it also repaired some fencing to keep people out. Neighbors says homeless people have been living there.
“I appreciate the city also,” said Smith.
“The city always tries to be as responsive as possible to citizen’s concerns. Our top priority is public safety,” said Jace Radke, Public and Media Relations Supervisor with the City of Las Vegas.
City officials say citizens who have a similar issue where they live can reach out to City Marshals and the “conditions” team will check things. That number is 702-229-6444.
They said in addition, unhoused residents can contact “MORE” teams to help them with resources, at 702-229-MORE (6673).
