LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Honoring victims and survivors of domestic violence Wednesday.

A local shelter held a candlelight vigil Wednesday during domestic violence awareness month.

The Shade Tree is a 24-hour shelter designed to the meet the needs of domestic violence and human trafficking survivors and their families.

According to the nonprofit, 44 percent of Nevadan women and 33 percent of men experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

Shade Tree says intimate partner violence alone affects more than 12 million people every year.

“If you just think about the statistics, it’s 1 in 4 woman and 1 in 7 men. If you just think about those numbers, and reflect on your circle of family and friends, that means that either you, someone you know, someone you love has or will be affected by domestic violence if we don’t start talking about it,” said Linda Perez, Shade Tree CEO.

Perez says the annual vigil is for those victims and survivors who came to the shelter for help and is used as a time to celebrate the step taken towards a better life.
