LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – UNLV men’s soccer’s late rally in its WAC opener fell short in a tight 1-0 loss to San Diego State Thursday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
After the Aztecs’ (4-4-2, 1-0-0) 73rd-minute score, the Rebels (3-6, 0-1) fought to the end with five of their seven total targets coming in the last 11 minutes of the match but the ball didn’t roll in their favor.
The late flurry included shots by senior Brophy Howard in the 80th minute, sophomore Mikah Madrid in the 86th minute, sophomore Tyler Ware in the 88th minute and a final attempt from Nico Lopez in the 89th minute.
At the match, several Rebel alumni were honored with a special recognition as part of the 50th anniversary of UNLV soccer’s existence.
Among them were members of UNLV’s first-ever men’s soccer squad that played its inaugural season in 1974 and laid the foundation for the men’s and women’s programs.
