LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Each year, the City of Las Vegas covers thousands of graffiti tags, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A team of six graffiti technicians are employed by the city, including Vic, who has been a technician for 11 years.
He didn’t want us to use his full name because he says sometimes the graffiti he paints over is gang-related.
He says he’s ran into incidents while on the job before.
“You’ve got to be careful, you’ve got to know your surroundings, that’s for sure,” he says.
Tagging is a misdemeanor and can cost up to six months in jail and/or up to $1,000. Despite the penalty, it is an ongoing problem for the city.
City officials say they cover about 225,000 tags every year across about 20 acres of surface area, costing about $1.2 million.
“Sometimes it gets covered, and as soon as we leave, a few hours later they’ll come back and tag it,” Vic says.
The city’s graffiti technicians only cover tags on public property, but they want citizens to report graffiti wherever they see it.
There are three ways to do it: Use the “See Click Fix” app, visit the city’s website, or call 702-229-6615.
