LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Some parents in the Inspirada area are beginning to feel the effects of the $20 million deficit in the Clark County School District budget.

Now, there is a new concern from some parents at Ellis Elementary School on how this will affect their children who are in specialized programs with their current teachers.

Heather Seltzer’s two daughters go to Ellis Elementary, but recently she received a letter from the principal that says up to 6 teachers will be moved around, and some will go to other schools. An additional 3 students will also be added to each school.

In her daughter Nora’s second grade class that means she will have 25 class mates.

“It’s already packed and teachers are spread thin its not fair,” Seltzer shared.

One of the teachers that will be moved is her daughter Nora’s current second-grade teacher.

“I was just getting to know her and I already loved her like not many people start to love their teacher on the 8th week of school,” Nora said.

There is also worry that with the new class size and a new teacher, Nora won’t get the attention that she needs.

“Nora has had some behavior issues since she started in school, she has got a little bit of acting out,” Seltzer said.

Nora’s acting out let her current teacher, Nora, and Nora’s mom to come up with a specialized plan known as a 504 plan so Nora could work on her behavior while still being in class with the other kids.

“Plans were being followed her teacher was so communicative over everything, we have done a few video conferences for the first couple months of school to make sure she was on track and her behavior this year was a 180 from what it was last year,” Seltzer explained.

But that was last year and this year now presents a whole new set of challenges.

“How do you tell your children your teacher is not there anymore because of money because someone higher up messed up,” Seltzer expressed. “I don’t think Nora has any clue what is happening.”

CCSD trustees are expected to discuss the budget shortfall on Thursday during their school board meeting.
