LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Mississippi woman filed a complaint against The STRAT Hotel, Casino & Tower claiming she suffered permanent scars from bed bugs.

FOX5 obtained the complaint filed Tuesday. It says Krystal N. checked in to the STRAT on Oct. 16, 2022.

After two nights, she woke up scratching and itching. She noticed painful welts around her body and would later find a bed bug in her room.

She notified a hotel employee who inspected the room, gave her and incident report and provided hydrocortisone cream for her injuries.

It says Krystal suffered permanent scars from the bug bites.

The lawsuit says she incurred medical expenses, the cost of the hotel room and replacement of her clothes and luggage.

It accuses the STRAT of “deliberately and recklessly” choosing not to inspect or ensure that her room was free of bed bugs before her stay. Or, if the casino knew about the bugs, they failed to eradicate them.

The lawsuit claims management did not implement adequate policies or procedures to train employees to inspect hotel rooms for bed bugs.

The plaintiff seeks about $30,000 for damages.

FOX5 reached out to The STRAT for a response. Because it’s an active legal matter, officials say they are not able to share anything at this time. However, they sent a statement released by the Nevada Resort Association in February.

“The health and safety of our guests and employees is the resort industry’s highest priority. With approximately 155,000 hotel rooms and 41 million annual visitors, four rooms impacted over a nearly five-month period that generated millions of room nights shows these are extremely rare and isolated occurrences. The minute number of incidents reflects the comprehensive and proactive health and safety measures and pest-control procedures Las Vegas resorts have in place to prevent and address issues,“ the association said. ”Unfortunately, these pests can be transported anywhere unwittingly in luggage and clothing. While incredibly rare, when reported our members take swift action in accordance with health and safety requirements. Guests are immediately relocated, and the room is taken out of service for extensive cleaning and extermination to eradicate any pests.”
