LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – After the unexpected passing of a loved one, a Las Vegas Valley family is now coping with another round of loss.
A pendant holding their family member’s ashes is missing. It was last seen at Sunset Park during the Renaissance Festival the weekend of Oct. 11 to 13.
FOX5 joined them as they searched the park. They say they are still hopeful they’ll find it.
“I am hopeful, I know that there’s still good in the world,” Amy Beattie said. Her little sister, Laura, passed away unexpectedly four weeks ago.
“There’s always been a dragonfly thing between the two of us,” she says. “It’s my little sister. Not anybody else’s, just mine.”
Beattie gave the silver dragonfly pendant to her step daughter, Aero Giannola, who was wearing it around her neck when it was lost at the park.
She says her stepdaughter and sister shared a special bond.
“She was always there for me and I always felt like I could talk to her,” Giannola says, describing her relationship with her aunt.
These last four weeks have been tough on the family, only getting tougher after the loss of the pendant.
“I can’t seem to express it, express how much I hate that she’s gone, how much sadness I feel that I never even got to say goodbye,” Giannola says.
The middle schooler says she’s hopeful the pendant will find its way back to her, but she knows there are a lot of places it could be.
The only thing giving her any peace of mind was seeing dragonflies in the park the day it was lost.
“I got a call from my mom that night that said ‘hey, even if you don‘t find her, she probably chose that spot for a reason. She probably wanted her final resting place to be there,’” Giannola says.
The family filed a missing item report at the festival but haven’t received any updates. At this point, they say they’re hoping someone picked it up and is searching for its rightful owners.
