LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – After Election Day, you may still see some political signs on display, but who is responsible for taking them down?
FOX5 reached out across the valley to understand the rules and regulations for using political signs before and after Election Day.
City of North Las Vegas
According to the city rules, political signs can be placed on “private property only.”
A fee of $125 must be paid per candidate to place any signs across the city limits. This aims to track each candidate’s campaign manager to track down the person responsible for damaged, hazardous, or removal of any signs.
Signs posted without paying the proper fees will be impounded until it is paid in full.
Regulations do not permit signs in areas that may interfere with traffic signals or obstruct drivers’ vision. Public property, utility poles, and right-of-way are other city-limit areas that candidates may not use to display political signs.
“The person or persons placing or causing the placement of any portable political sign, including the person whose candidacy the sign supports, the owner of such sign, and the owner of the property upon which the sign is located are jointly and severally responsible for removing the sign,” said City of North Las Vegas officials.
The city says political signs must be removed fifteen days after Election Day.
City of Las Vegas
According to the city municipal code, political signs must be removed 15 days after the election.
If they are not removed within the permitted time frame, the city will provide a 5-day written notice before removing the signs. Those responsible will be charged with the removal of the signs, which should be paid within 30 days of the removal statement.
City of Henderson
City officials confirm they do not have a mandated time for campaign signs to be posted after election day.
According to the City of Henderson, after 30 days of the election, city staff will take responsibility for removing political signs.
“The City does request that campaign sign owners refrain from leaving signs posted after the completion of a general election if the sign is no longer intended to serve any expressive or informational purpose,” said the City of Henderson.
Boulder City
According to the Boulder City code, political signs in residential areas can remain up all year round as long as they meet size requirements.
Meanwhile, candidates can display political signs in noncommercial areas 60 days before Election Day but must be removed 5 days after the general election.
