LMPD officers injured after being shot during struggle over gun; 19-year-old arrested

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Louisville Metro police said a 19-year-old man was arrested after two officers were taken to the hospital shot during a struggle over a gun.

According to an arrest citation, Jeremiah Thompson is facing two counts of assault, wanton endangerment, receiving stolen property, and resisting arrest.

LMPD said officers stopped a stolen 2018 grey Kia Soul with several people inside on Roseland Street in Smoketown around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

The arrest citation said Thompson admitted to driving the car, but he resisted arrest and officers took him to the ground. He was reportedly face down with his hands underneath his torso and refused to give officers his hands.

Police said the struggle, a Glock 26 fired a round and hit Thompson’s torso and right arm, an officer in the right hand, and a second officer in the left leg near his knee. The officer shot in the hand needed surgery.

The officers were taken to UofL Hospital while the suspect was taken to Jewish Hospital. All three are in stable condition, according to the deputy chief. No one else was injured during the incident.

Thompson was eventually booked at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. He’s scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21.

LMPD asked the public to avoid the area around 8:30 p.m. due to a heavy police presence around Preston and Jackson Streets caused by two of the people in the car fleeing the vehicle. At a press conference after 10 p.m., police said everyone had been accounted for, and there was no ongoing danger to the public.

WAVE News reporter Logan Perrone was at the scene where he saw an officer being taken away in an ambulance.

Perrone said police have their weapons drawn outside a building there. SWAT personnel were on scene as well.

Police said they will provide an update on the shooting sometime Wednesday. LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit will investigate the incident. Body camera video is expected to be released within 10 business days.
