Police found a body near West Owens Avenue and Stocket street the afternoon of Jan. 2. The body was left between a building and railroad tracks.
The person who reported the body that day was looking for a friend who he hasn’t seen since a fight in the same area on Dec. 31. He was flagged by a woman crying after she found a body.
He followed the woman and looked underneath a carpet-type fabric to see if it was his friend, but it wasn’t. This was when he called Metro.
When officers responded, they learned about the fight and reported the body to the coroner. The investigator from the medical office initially believed the victim died of natural causes until they later found a gunshot wound in his abdomen.
His death would be deemed a homicide.
Police were able to find the other party involved in the fight. In one interview, a man told police everyone was drunk and started to fight each other. At some point, shots were fired and everyone involved ran away.
During the interview, police showed a photo of the victim.
“That’s my boy,” the man said. “That’s a whole ‘nother situation.”
He told police the victim was accused of an incident involving his female cousin.
Because of this, he told one of his friends, Demots, to shoot the victim, but “not kill him.”
The arrest report says Demots accidentally shot the victim in the abdomen instead of the leg. The group started to wrap the victim in fabric and left him there.
Demots initial appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court is set for Jan. 21 at 8:30 a.m.
