LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Hundreds of people weighed in on proposed solutions to crime, congestion and traffic in Las Vegas’ growing Chinatown corridor.

After 700 people answered on a summer survey, the Inspiring Spring Mountain project is now gathering input on various solutions to common concerns from tourists, locals and businesses – and suggested ways to improve the corridor.

Hundreds of people came to Chinatown Plaza’s mall, Thursday, to speak to organizers, look at displays and weigh in.

Early this year, Chinatown was finally approved to become a “redevelopment area”: some property tax dollars can be diverted to fund improvements.

Some solutions to various problems were more popular than others: to solve parking challenges, many wanted parking garages, free parking for locals and shuttles. Many others liked widened sidewalks for pedestrian safety, and better lighting across Chinatown to deter crime.

Commissioner Justin Jones said crosswalks between Chinatown Plaza and Shanghai Plaza are a priority for pedestrian safety.

“We know that people will come over here to Chinatown Plaza for their boba, and then they’ll head over to Shanghai Plaza for their Thai food. We want to make sure that people aren’t crossing the street and playing ‘frogger.’ We’ll have a safe pedestrian walkway between these two wonderful shopping centers,” he said.

There will be more listening sessions, to come– but people can still weigh in, online. Inspiring Spring Mountain

Further developments will be reviewed by the public, over the summer– then a final proposal will be presented to the Clark County Commission for approval.
