LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – One elementary school parent says he is frustrated by the sudden cancellation of two early morning classes at Sig Rogich Middle School.

The classes were held before school hours. They gave students the chance to transition to the middle school curriculum early.

A letter sent to families from the school’s principal confirmed the cancellations, citing budget concerns within the district.

“Friday, January 31, 2025 will be the last day for your student to attend the math and ELA programs at Rogich Middle School. Due to the budget concerns within our district we have made the decision to utilize all budget reserves for our current middle school students for the remainder of this year and next year as well,” the letter reads

Parent, Sam Castor, says parents were first alerted about the cancellation by their students.

“It was kind of shocking, kids were coming out of the class crying because they love the class and they’ve been sacrificing for it,” Castor explained.

According to Castor this group of fifth graders already lost half of their first grade experience because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He says his son relied on the class to advance his education.

“This is a big deal. These kids have already been short changed,” Castor said. “Several parents have offered to sign petitions, do whatever they can to keep these classes.”

The Clark County School District provided the following statement:

This comes on the heels of a nearly $11 million budget shortfall, and the Nevada Department of Education Stepping in to get the district’s budget back on track.
