LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – There will soon be more rock climbing and bike trail opportunities on federal public land such as Red Rock Canyon in northwest Las Vegas.

It’s part of the EXPLORE Act which was signed into law by former President Joe Biden earlier in January.

The new legislation rolls a dozen or so existing outdoor recreation-related initiatives into one policy.

“I moved here for this opportunity and I’m hiking and climbing in these peaks for four days a week,” said Alex Honnold, a free soloist rock climber. “I am constantly seeing groups of folks enjoying the outdoors here. It is just so important for the community, the climbers traveling here, to enjoy these mountains.”

Fixed anchors for rock climbers, like bolts and pitons, are also now legally protected in wilderness areas.

“The PARC (Protecting America’s Rock Climbing) Act adds clarity saying that the anchors on those routes are appropriate,” Honnold said. “It is worthwhile to have safety gear in place that people can continue to enjoy these incredible routes and still climb them and descend them safely.”

Red Rock Canyon welcomes more than three million visitors annually, many of them are climbers.
