LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Recent data from UNLV researchers shows the senior food insecurity rate in Clark County is 18%.

Associate Professor and Chair of UNLV’s Department of Economics, Ian McDonough, says this data is based on how seniors answered questions about how worried they are about running out of food, and whether they’re consuming balanced meals.

McDonough says the rate of senior food insecurity in Southern Nevada is much higher than national values.

“When you actually talk to the households, as opposed to trying to use national data to impute down, you see the problem is actually much worse than I think what people think,” he says. “These are our neighbors, and to think that in the U.S. we have households that are chronically food insecure is just, in my mind, seemingly unacceptable.”

Three Square CEO Lisa Segler says they have several targeted initiatives for seniors. Their Golden Grocery Program offers seniors fresh produce, protein, and whole grain once a month.

It also offers home grocery delivery for seniors who can’t leave their homes, and free rides for seniors who don’t have transportation.

Three Square also offers a free hot meal at several Clark County library locations five days a week. You can find more information here.
