Investigators said Polito could have had several motivations for the attack. However, police said they don’t believe Polito had specific motivations against the victims.

“It is believed Polito targeted UNLV because it symbolized an institution, was close to his home, and because he was not hired when he applied there,” investigators wrote.

“No reason was identified for Polito’s choice to shoot Patricia Navarro-Velez, Naoko Takemaru, Jarry Chang or Daraboth Rith. None of them had any known affiliation with Polito in any way, and it is very possible that they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” police said.

“Lastly, nowhere in Polito’s personal documents – digital or written – nor in interviews with family, friends, associates, or former coworkers, was there any evidence of racism. Racism, once suspected as a motive, was unfounded.”
