LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – For those planning on using a tax preparer this year, choose wisely.

The IRS warns tax time is prime time for scammers posing as pros. Be sure to check the preparer’s history and make sure they have a calif tax ID number.

Also, find out what fees would be paid up front.

Be wary of services that base the price on the size of the refund. In addition, the IRS advised using someone who’s available year-round, so they will be there is problems surface after April 15.

Also, watch out for red flags, like a preparer not signing the return. If they print forms and have the filer mail then in they could be an unscrupulous “ghost” preparer.

Be sure the preparer uses the IRS e-file and have the refund direct deposited in the filer’s account and not the preparer’s.
