LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Strip will shut down for several races during a festive race weekend, as a 5k, 10k and half marathon will happen over the course of two days as part of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series.

Las Vegas is one of several locations around the world where the series puts on races, but the valley means something special to the race director.

“This is my favorite spot to do it, and that is because what we do here is unprecedented,” Nicole Christenson told FOX5 Friday morning. “Shutting down the Las Vegas Strip in the entertainment capital of the world, no one else can do that.”

More than 27,000 people have signed up to race, with a wide range of competitors.

“We have all 50 states represented, as well as over 60 countries,” Courtney Zubey, the race’s marketing manager, said. “So people truly come from far and wide.”

The festivities continue after the races.

“Saturday night (is the) runner’s party, post-5k,” Zubey explained. “You’ll go on the Strip on Sunday morning, and then the main event Sunday, followed by an afterparty.”

The 5k will close roads throughout downtown Las Vegas, including on Fremont Street and Bridger and Carson Avenues. The Strip will be closed at multiple intersections for the 10k and half marathon, including Tropicana to Sahara, as well as multiple off-ramps on I-15 along the Strip corridor.

Closures start as early as 8:00 Saturday morning and will reopen early Monday morning.
