LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Southwest Valley neighbors are “on edge” after several reported burglaries in Highlands Ranch.

According to Metro Police, ten burglaries have been reported since the beginning of the year in the neighborhood, which sits between Blue Diamond and Cactus near Decatur and Jones.

Enterprise Area Command Captain Joshua Younger says there are “commonalities” between some of the ten reported burglaries, but not all of them.

He says in order to call it a “series,” there needs to be at least four burglaries where they are certain the same suspect, or suspects, are involved.

“We understand their privacy has been invaded, deeply affecting them, and therefore it affects us as a police agency. Regardless of whether it’s a series or related, every burglary that comes to us we handle the same,” Younger says.

Younger says they have upped patrols in the neighborhood, and officers are canvassing the area for additional video and witnesses.

“I know a lot of people in the neighborhood would feel a lot better if they saw police presence up and down the street a few times a day, just knowing police are around if necessary,” said Highlands Ranch resident, Calvin Lyons.

Lyons says a masked group of three broke into his home at the end of January, stealing his wife’s purses and jewelry, and scaring his family.

“People seem to be on edge at this point. There’s been multiple other break-ins over the last three months or so and the word has gotten out,” Lyons added.

Wednesday night, Metro Police met with Southwest Valley neighbors to talk about safety. Neighbors asked police how they can protect themselves and their properties.

A Metro Police Crime Prevention Specialist suggested residents install cameras and motion sensored floor lights. Captain Younger advised neighbors to form a community and share information amongst each other.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Younger says all ten cases are still open.
