LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Students at Silverado High School will lose some electives in the 2025-2026 school year.
FOX5 obtained an email sent to staff and 145 students letting them know budget cuts meant its JROTC, Theatre, Dance, and Industrial Maintenance/shop programs will not be offered in the upcoming school year.
“There’s a lot of people in our program who are really depending on it,” said sophomore Jaylen Bush. He is currently in the JROTC program.
Some students said they were not considering the military or higher education until they participated in the soon-to-be cut programs.
“They’re taking away a lot of people’s careers right now,” freshman Zoe Vergan said.
Vergan chose to go to Silverado High School specifically for its JROTC program.
“My first reaction was ‘I’m transferring schools,‘” Vergan continued. “To leave, I have to risk not playing sports for a whole year to go transfer to be a part of another program.
Instead of continuing with JROTC or the other cut electives, 145 students like Ryan Rossana were asked to choose different electives for next year. “It was one of the best programs this school had to offer and I felt like it had a big part of my future.”
FOX5 asked the Clark County School District why Silverado isn’t getting as much money for the 2025-2026 school year.
A spokesperson responded:
Now that Silverado’s budget won’t include JROTC, Kiara Bautista-Orozco is forced to think of another career path.
“It makes me feel confused about what I should do after high school. It’s like a whole entire part of me is going to be missing.”
Now, JROTC students are asking if the principal might reconsider cutting the program. FOX5 reached out to the principal to see, but has yet to hear back.
