LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The backyard chicken frenzy continues as chicks come in this spring.
Tractor Supply in the the northwest Las Vegas Valley had a new shipment of them this week.
As FOX5 saw firsthand, it was a mad dash to get hands on them.
There were dozens of people waiting to make sure they went home with chicks.
“It’s my husband’s fault. He decided the first time that when the eggs skyrocketed he wasn’t going to pay 12 dollars for eggs. He said he was going to get four chickens. I didn’t believe him – he brought back four chickens and I fell in love,” said customer Tamara.
Another customer named Alejandra tells FOX5 she once waited three hours at the store a couple weeks ago, but could not get any chicks.
This week, she had a two hour wait. Even though she already has chickens, the sky high egg prices made her come back for chicks.
There was a store minimum purchase of four chicks. However, some bought up to 20 chicks at a time.
“I knew there was going to be a crowd, but I didn’t know people are going to be getting 20 and 30 chicks at a time,” Susanne said.
Store manager Linzy Stahl tells FOX5, chick delivery days are always a scramble.
“Phones never stop ringing. It is always about the chicks,” Stahl said.
Getting the chicks to the store is not the hard part, Stahl also tries to educate those who come in just to start their own egg supply.
” A lot of people have learned quickly that this takes time, care and money after a few months,” Stahl said.
Stahl said this year’s demand for chicks has been especially high than previous year’s where we have seen high egg prices.
Their next chick delivery is Wednesday.
