Lundy elementary repairs underway, still on track to reopen for incoming school year

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Mount Charleston community is eagerly waiting for Lundy Elementary to reopen.

After months of back and forth the school district decided to reopen it after being closed because of tropical storm Hilary.

On Thursday, FOX5 went to Lundy Elementary to see the repair work being done.

“I’m thrilled that work is going on all through winter people have come up, and said oh the fencing is going up, oh there’s a truck there so we knew something was being done and that gave people comfort knowing we weren’t being delayed as far as that’s concerned,” said resident Chris Giunchigliani.

Giunchigliani met with FOX5 by the school as repairs were being made.

We saw the school property fenced off and several bulldozers working on the wash that surrounds the school.

Giunchigliani has pushed for these repairs from the beginning.

“You took Lundy off, if there are internal issues we didn’t know about because your report if you read it said a lot of it was pre-existing conditions then you did not maintain that facility,” Giunchigliani said in a August meeting.

She has been to many school board and town board meetings that focused on whether or not to reopen Lundy.

Last May parents of Lundy Elementary school received a letter stating the school would close because of repair costs.

Since then there has been a lot of back and forth on whether or not to reopen the school.

In the meantime, students were being bussed nearly 2 hours to Indian Springs, which made parents upset.

Back in December, school board trustees voted to repair the school and in February $7.8 million was approved for the repairs.

Enrollment for Lundy Elementary started last week, however we will not know the final numbers until later this summer.

According to CCSD Trustees, Lundy is set to reopen by August 1.
