LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas is a big city because of tourism. However, lately, the driving force behind our economy has been slowing down.
The latest tourism numbers from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) are showing declines across the board.
The big number we’re looking at is a 7.8% drop in overall visitors to Vegas.
Las Vegas airport traffic is down 3.9%, and gaming wins are down too, by 1.75% in Clark County.
Interestingly, all of those gaming revenue losses are on the Strip. Everywhere else in the valley, like downtown, North Las Vegas and the Boulder Strip, are all seeing revenue increases.
Another notable piece from the report is that convention attendance is up by 10%. That’s helped a lot by a huge health care conference just held here as part of a rotation of other cities. which means we won’t be getting that bump next year.
A lot of our visitors are here for conventions, meaning they’re here for work. That makes up 15% of all visitors.
Since that is where we saw the only increase over the last year, it means the share of people actually choosing to come to Vegas to visit outside of work is even lower than you might think, when looking at the 8% decrease.
In its summary of this report, LVCVA specifically points out President Donald Trump’s tariffs as part of the reason why this past March was slower than last year. An example of this that many are noticing across the valley is fewer Canadians visiting.
