LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A memorial is growing in the northwest valley outside of Arbor View High School after a senior was hit and killed by an accused impaired driver who appeared in court Saturday morning.
FOX5 heard from community members who are understandably shaken up and reflecting on a life gone too soon.
“I just want to send my prayers to her family, and I’m gonna cry.”
“It’s just really sad. Like, I cannot. I don’t know why I cannot get this girl out of my head.”
No one wanted to go on camera, but they were able to say a few words about the high school senior, who was killed in that crash on Friday morning.
“Being so close to graduation, it’s more concerning of this young life being lost of how we can move forward and make sure that she this doesn’t go unnoticed by anybody. That this never happens again in this community.”
Those neighbors also mentioned ongoing traffic safety concerns in the area, considering this happened in front of the Arbor View High School campus.
“I‘ve been here for 14 years in this community. It is a very tight-knit community, and we have always had worries about the kids walking back and forth in school. Because these little lines don’t stop cars, unfortunately.”
The driver of that car, 37-year-old Keenan Jackson, was arrested on scene and appeared in court Saturday morning.
He faces DUI resulting in death, reckless driving and driving without a valid license.
His bail has been set at $500,000, and he is on high-level electronic monitoring.
Several students told FOX5 that a graduation walk event planned for Friday was cancelled.
Being so close to putting on her cap and gown is what really made one mother in the community reflect on the young life, taken too soon.
“This girl was supposed to go practice her walk. She’s supposed to be graduating. It’s just, it’s not fair. She was literally robbed. Like, her family was robbed.”
Metro police tell us the high school senior’s death is the 59th traffic-related death in their jurisdiction so far this year.
