LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Only on FOX5, Video captured the moment just before a deadly crash occurred in the southwest Las Vegas Valley when two brothers riding e-scooters were hit by a car.
FOX5 went back to the scene, the intersection of Warm Springs and Torrey Pines, with Cat Velasquez, the mother of the victim in this incident.
Her 22-year-old son Christopher Soto was killed. Her 14-year-old son Carlos was critically injured. Metro has yet to complete their crash investigation but Velasquez says the video should be a warning to both drivers and e-scooter/ e-bike riders.
It doesn’t show the moment of impact but the video does show a black car speeding toward the intersection where a number of cars are stopped at the light. The black car does not stop.
At the same time, the two brothers on their e-scooters enter the intersection. The video does not show if the light was green, yellow or red.
“I have to drive by here every day. It’s not right,” Velasquez said through her tears.
Velasquez says with so many more teens and young adults riding e-scooters and e-bikes, everyone needs to pay more attention regardless of who has the right-of-way.
“Even when the light changes green, I don’t go. Us as drivers have the responsibility to pay attention, slow down. There’s no reason to be driving 50 down a 35. It’s just, it’s insane,” Velasquez contended.
Though the crash happened back in March, today outlines of where the brother’s scooters came to rest are still in the road.
“It is the worst feeling ever to have to bury your own child,” Velasquez shared. While the family deals with the loss of Christopher, Carlos continues to recover with months of physical therapy ahead.
“His injuries, some will heal, some will not. He still has a gouge of his skull, kind of indented. Doctor told him last week that he’ll never have vision again in his eye,” Velasquez shared. As a mom, Vasquez doesn’t want any other family to go through what she’s gone through she wants to see more enforcement at Warm Springs and Torrey Pines especially with two schools close by.
“Middle school and elementary school, and these kids walk back and forth every single day, all the time, and it’s just. It’s scary. It’s scary for them,” Velasquez asserted.
FOX5 reached out to Metro about the crash to find out exactly what happened and who is at fault. They say it is still under investigation.
The family asks if you happened to be driving by and have video from the time of the crash on March 24th to send it to Metro Police.
Tuesday afternoon, there was another deadly crash on Warm Springs near Torrey Pines. The street near a memorial for Christopher was blocked off with police tape for hours as police investigated.
The driver, Daniel Stakleff, was arrested for DUI and reckless driving resulting in death after hitting and killing a 23-year-old man walking on the sidewalk.
