11 inmates escape from Orleans jail, including multiple accused murderers

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Eleven inmates escaped the Orleans Justice Center around midnight early Friday (May 16) morning.

Fox 8 obtained a photo of a hole in the wall of the jail where the inmates reportedly escaped, according to law enforcement sources. Scribbled around the hole are messages including “To Easy LOL,” “Catch us when you can,” “We innocent,” “Most Hated,” and profanity.

Sheriff Susan Hutson said the escape was discovered during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m. A law enforcement source confirmed the escapes to Fox 8 around 10:15 a.m. The sheriff’s office notified the media around 10:50 a.m.

The jail was placed on full lockdown as a result of the escapes.

The escapees are:

Antoine Massey, domestic abuse and theft
Lenton Venburen, illegal carrying of weapon
Leo Tate, burglary, illegal carrying of weapon
Kendell Myles, intentional concealment of weapon
Derrick Groves, murder, attempted murder
Jermaine Donald, murder, aggravated battery
Corey Boyd, murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery
Gary Price, three counts of attempted murder
Robert Moody
Dkenan Dennis
Keith Lewis

Their charges range from illegal weapons possession to murder, according to court documents. They are to be considered armed and dangerous, the sheriff’s office said.

Myles was recaptured in a French Quarter parking garage. A source tells Fox 8 that Myles was spotted in the area using facial recognition technology on a Project NOLA camera.

Myles was previously accused of escaping the Bridge City Center for youth and shooting 59-year-old Scott Toups in Uptown. His case was tossed in February 2023 after the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office missed a deadline.

Massey has a history of escapes.

Groves is the only escapee convicted of his crimes. He fatally shot two people in a 2018 mass shooting on Mardi Gras in the Lower 9th Ward.

“Someone clearly dropped the ball and there’s no excuse for this,” Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a statement.
