LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Witnesses spoke with FOX5 Friday about the moment a gunman opened fire inside a northwest valley gym, injuring multiple people and killing one.

Police and firefighters arrived at the Las Vegas Athletic Club’s northwest location on Rainbow and Vegas around 1:34 p.m. Upon arrival, officers identified the armed suspect, who attempted to flee, and shot him.

The suspect was taken to UMC, along with three other victims, where he later died, police said during a press briefing. Police also confirmed that one other victim died at the hospital.

One witness, Jorge Gamboa, told FOX5 in the aftermath, “That was really, really, scary, and I can’t even believe I went through this… It was really crazy.”

He continued, “Pretty much, you had to run for your life.”

Gamboa said that at first, he didn’t know what was happening. “I didn’t know it was a shooting. I thought someone dropped a weight or something.”

Another witness, Shahdi, was in the women’s bathroom when she heard the gunfire, and says she immediately knew the situation was dire.

“Bang, bang, bang, bang, and then I heard the glass break. We were just hiding in the bathroom with a couple of ladies,” Shahdi said.

She explained that, in order to hide, she had to pick her legs up and stand on the toilet. The whole time, not knowing what was going on, just that something was very wrong.

At one point, Shahdi told the other women hiding, “Ladies, let’s go… My legs are tired, we have to go.”

Blocks away, Enrique Valesquez was waiting for any details about his brother, Anthony, who was inside the gym during the shooting.

Anthony said he was working out with his headphones in when he heard three shots ring out. He also believed someone dropped weights on the floor at first, until it became clear something was wrong. “Everyone was running out, and in the locker room, some people were on the floor just lying down.”

Valesquez was able to leave hours later, alongside his brother, who was unharmed. FOX5 was there to capture their emotional reunion and embrace.

“It feels great to have him hug me and have the warmth of a loved one,” Anthony said.

Metro police have yet to identify the suspect or the victim in this shooting, but plan to share more details in an additional briefing next week.
