NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Louisiana State Police on Monday (May 19) recaptured Gary C. Price, one of 10 inmates who escaped the Orleans Justice Center jail last Friday.

Price, 21, is the fourth fugitive to be recaptured since what Gov. Jeff Landry said is the biggest jailbreak in Louisiana history.

A law enforcement source told Fox 8 that Price was apprehended in an abandoned house in the 4600 block of Good Drive. Price was wanted in connection with an attempted first-degree murder case.

A neighbor shared surveillance camera video with Fox 8 of Price’s arrest.

Three of the 10 inmates who pulled off the daring escape early Friday already were recaptured within 24 hours.

Kendell Myers was the first to be recaptured, after being found Friday morning hiding underneath a car in the parking lot of the French Quarter’s Hotel Monteleone. Robert Moody was caught Friday evening in the 3500 block of Second Street, in the Hoffman Triangle neighborhood. Later Friday night, Dkenan Dennis was recaptured after police converged on Dale Street.

Louisiana State Police already transported the first three recaptured inmates out of New Orleans on a secured helicopter flight early Saturday. The agency said only that they were being taken to a “secure state correctional facility.” A source told Fox 8 the inmates were being taken to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

State Police said Monday that Price also “will ultimately be transported to a secure state facility outside of the area.”

The LSP said a task force of more than 200 law enforcement personnel from various local, state and federal agencies continue to “work around the clock” to locate the remaining fugitives.

Sheriff Susan Hutson said there is evidence the escape was assisted from within the jail. Three employees have been suspended as part of the internal investigation.

Hutson explained that the only officer assigned to the escapees’ housing unit had stepped away for food. During that time, the inmates opened a cell door, removed a toilet from the wall, accessed the recreation yard, climbed a fence, and crossed the interstate.

On Monday, Rep. Aimee Adatto Freeman (D-New Orleans) became the first state official to call for Hutson to resign. Hutson rebuffed the suggestion.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies have been conducting searches throughout the city for the remaining escapees:

  • Derrick Groves, convicted of killing two people and shooting two others on Mardi Gras Day in 2018.
  • Antoine Massey, held on domestic abuse and vehicle theft charges, with prior escapes dating back to 2007. Also wanted in St. Tammany Parish for kidnapping and rape.
  • Lenton Vanburen, accused of a 2021 homicide in New Orleans East.
  • Jermaine Donald, charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery, weapons violations, and obstruction of justice.
  • Leo Tate, awaiting trial on burglary, drug, and weapons charges.
  • Corey Boyd, accused of killing Brandon Fees during a car burglary in 2024.

State Rep. Jason Hughes (D-New Orleans) asked the Louisiana Legislative Auditor to investigate gaps in the sheriff’s security protocol, the agency’s procedures after an escape, and how the jail budget is being spent. New Orleans City Council vice president Helena Moreno told Fox 8 on Saturday that she is working in partnership with Hughes, as the process requires a state lawmaker to file the formal request.
