LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A jury awarded a family $15 million in a civil suit regarding a deadly DUI crash involving a former UNLV basketball recruit.

The crash happened Dec. 30, 2020. Zaon Collins was 19 at at the time. Las Vegas Metro Police said he drove nearly 90 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Authorities said that Collins’ level of THC in his blood was approximately 50% over the legal limit at the time of the crash.

The other driver involved, Eric Echevarria, died. He was 52.

Collins served a 90-day sentence after pleading guilty. February 2024, he was back in Las Vegas to play against College of Southern Nevada with Salt Lake Community College.

Wednesday, the jury found Collins to be negligent in the crash and found legal cause.

The family was awarded $15 million for damages, medical expenses, loss of companionship and funeral expenses.
