RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – A new law will go into effect next month authorizing the use of cameras on school bus stop arms.

Assembly Bill 527 allows school districts across the state to install automated safety enforcement cameras, which will capture images of vehicles that illegally pass school buses when the stop arm is extended and its red lights are flashing.

The images will then be reviewed by local traffic enforcement before an infraction citation is issued.

It will be considered a moving violation, meaning no points will be put on a driver’s record. Funds from the citation would pay for the cameras.

School districts are required to do a 30-day public awareness campaign before full implementation.
