LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — On this day in history, July 21, 1956, life was good at the Sands Hotel. Photos showed guests enjoying Las Vegas sunshine.

The Sands was a fixture on the Las Vegas Strip from 1952 to to 1996. Its iconic Copa Room featured regular performances by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis Jr.

Howard Hughes bought the hotel in 1967. It was the first purchase in his legendary hotel-casino shopping spree.

The property ultimately closed in November 1996 and was demolished to may way for the Venetian.
