Las Vegas hosts brief battle for undisputed heavyweight title

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — July 22 is a big day in boxing history.

On this day in 1963, Sonny Liston took on Floyd Patterson at the Las Vegas Convention Center for the undisputed heavyweight title.

It was the first title fight held under the jurisdiction of the new World Boxing Council. Liston was a four-to-one favorite, and the defending champion heading into the bout.

He proved the oddsmakers right, knocking out Patterson in the first round, only two minutes and ten seconds into the match.

Liston held the title until 1964 when he took on a young Cassius Clay, also known as Muhammed Ali.
