What would make Las Vegas Valley streets safer? RTC survey wants your feedback

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Valley residents can weigh in on street safety in their neighborhood, and your feedback can lead to future road improvements and changes.

FOX5 told you about the launch of the “Safe Streets For All” Action Plan: an effort to reduce crashes and deaths valleywide through education, enforcement and street engineering.

On LetsGoSafely.com, people can pinpoint an exact street or intersection and make detailed suggestions, such as:

  • What makes them feel unsafe while driving or walking?
  • Are wider sidewalks needed?
  • Do the streets need better lighting?
  • Would a stop sign help drivers in the area?

RTC would like 10,000 residents to weigh in.

“We want to identify where the concerns are from the community. This is a community-driven effort,” said Deputy Chief Executive Officer David Swallow.

Among the 1,000 survey responses so far, many residents voiced concerns about dangerous drivers. aggressive driving, red-light runners, running stop signs and lots of speeding.

“Unfortunately, we know that speeding and impairment are the two leading causes of a lot of the fatalities that we see,” Swallow said.

After filling out the survey, residents can sign up to participate in a “walk audit” in their community.

“Not only do we have engineers and planners, but we invite community members to walk along the walk audit. We literally walk along sections of roadway and say, ‘how does the sidewalk look? Is it wide enough? Are there things that are broken? Should we have a crosswalk here? Maybe we need a traffic signal at this location? Maybe we need to fix the lights? That’s captured in the walk audit, and then that helps inform public works agencies throughout the Valley,” Swallow said.
