LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Big plans for growth around Lake Las Vegas. The City of Henderson plans to add a roundabout to handle increasing traffic.
A developer also wants to add a 24-hour “upscale market” and a gas station. A community meeting on the proposals was held Thursday evening.
Both the roundabout and grocery store would be at Lake Las Vegas Parkway and Galleria Drive. It’s right by where the Las Vegas Wash runs into Lake Las Vegas.
Some concerns were raised about bringing a 24/7 market to the area just off a popular nature trail. While the store is still a proposal, the roundabout will soon break ground.
“We really have one way in and out of the community,” explained Jonell Maple who lives in Lake Las Vegas.
“Once we had a flood across the bridge and we couldn’t get out for like six hours and no one could get in,” Maple added.
Keeping traffic flowing on Lake Las Vegas Parkway is essential for the Lake Las Vegas community.
“We are in the 55+ and older community and we have a fair number of emergencies that happen,” Maple argued.
A large crowd showed up for an information session Thursday evening at the Lake Las Vegas Sports Club. The City of Henderson’s Public Works team says the roundabout will make it safer.
“The City of Henderson is a roundabout first community. We feel that the flow of traffic and the safety of pedestrians in our roundabouts is much safer than a stop sign intersection,” Steven Conner City Engineer for the City of Henderson contended.
“I haven’t seen an accident but I’m surprised that we haven’t had one,” reported Ginger Stafford who lives in Lake Las Vegas. Stafford says the intersection is a problem as people blow through the stop signs.
As Lake Las Vegas and nearby neighborhoods continue to add thousands of homes, the City of Henderson is adding numerous roundabouts.
“Going from here to passed where all the Cadence construction is, there’s five roundabouts… people go into them like it’s the Indy 500,” Stafford recounted. Neighbors also got a first look at renderings of the proposed upscale 24-hour market, what developer claims would be a first of its kind.
The Emerald Marketplace would also have gas pumps, EV charging, and even a restaurant but some neighbors expressed concerns about it being open around the clock.
“We didn’t want a 7/11 type thing. The fact that it has got the restaurant, as well as some of the seating outside, I think is going to work well,” Stafford shared.
“We are a very quiet community and we would like to keep it quiet,” Maple stated.
The City of Henderson says the roundabout construction will begin this fall. The luxury marketplace project application is scheduled to go before the Henderson Planning Commission as soon next week for a hearing/vote before it goes to a future city council meeting.
