LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As the chance of thunderstorms increases in the Las Vegas Valley, officials from NV Energy said they have completed replacing wood poles with more durable materials able to withstand monsoonal systems seen in the region.
The replacements were mainly around major freeway crossings, officials said. Those projects included:
- Desert Inn Road and Interstate 15
- Apex Road and Interstate 15
- Craig Road (State Route 573) and Interstate 15
- Sahara Avenue and Interstate 15
- West Washington Avenue and Interstate 15
- Harmon Avenue and Interstate 15
- Boulder Highway and U.S. 95
“Additionally, our Pole Stopper program involves replacing every fifth to eighth wood structure with stronger materials to prevent cascade failures,” a release from NV Energy said.
The changes come after a dry microburst in July caused several power poles to fall on top of cars traveling along Jones Boulevard, north of Tropicana Avenue.
Forecasters from FOX5 say monsoonal moisture is expected to push into Southern Nevada over the weekend.
