LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — After a network security incident led to the shutdown of all DMV offices across Nevada, an “open” sign hanging on a third-party DMV office may be a sign of relief for some.

Officials from the Nevada DMV posted an update to social media Tuesday afternoon, that DMV offices would remain closed “until further notice.” All cancelled appointments during the statewide network outage will be honored as walk-ins for a two-week period following reopening, officials say.

All in-person and online transactions, as well as kiosk transactions, remain temporarily unavailable, except for Rapid Registration and Turbo Titles. At a press conference Wednesday, Nevada DMV Director, Tonya Laney, said other available services include their online complaint and contact-center chat system, and the KnowtoDrive online driver exam.

Their website is also working, and Laney suggested keeping an eye online for updates. In the meantime DMV 4 Me Owner, Daniel Braverman said they are experiencing an influx of business since Monday. The third-party DMV is located off Tropicana and Pecos.

“We’ve got an influx of calls, obviously, because people can’t get a hold of the DMV right now,” he said. “They kind of left not knowing what to do.”

Braverman said they are still able to help customers fill out their vehicle registration paperwork and start getting it processed, however, until the DMV reopens their hands are tied too.

“We can’t get into the DMV, so there’s no way to submit documentation,” he says.

Wednesday afternoon, Laney provided good news for those facing an ID or vehicle registration expiration.

“We will be waiving any late fees or penalties that are occurring because of the closure. Any expiration dates that fall in the program window are being programmed to be waived,” she said.

She added they are working with the Governor’s Office and law enforcement to ask them to be lenient to customers that fall into this timeframe.

“Let me clear, this leniency is only going to apply to customers who applied due to the outage,” she said.

FOX5 also reached out to local law enforcement agencies about their expiration- enforcement plans.

“As part of our standard citation process, officers consider multiple factors, including the current DMV closure. Services to the public remain unaffected, and staff continue to obtain information while using work-around solutions as needed,” a Henderson Police spokesperson said in a statement.

A North Las Vegas Police Department spokesperson said it is the law for drivers to have their registration on them, even if it expired. But, their enforcement will be on a case-by-case basis.

FOX5 did not hear back from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
