LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Medicare has taken steps to protect users from fraud, but if your card falls into the wrong hands, you could still be vulnerable.

Medicare removed social security numbers from cards to enhance security. However, the experts at AARP warn that your personal ID number also needs protection. Criminals can use it to file false claims or to get reimbursements. For that reason, AARP says it’s wisest to only carry the card when you have a medical appointment.

Should your card get lost or stolen, you can log on to your Medicare account, order a new one, and print a temporary card to use until it arrives. You can also call directly at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to order a replacement. It typically takes about 30 days for a new card to arrive. In the meantime, be sure to make note of your Medicare number. You don’t always need the card to use your benefits; quite often, your number is enough.
